I just (last night) went through the exact same thing (trying to compile Mplayer after upgrading to 3.3.1). I only got it to work after reinstalling the 3.3-43 versions in my apt cache. If you still have that version, I would suggest downgrading to that version. My GUESS is that the linking was failing because almost all the other packages were built against 3.3 pre or 3.3 final (-43). I do know it worked after the downgrade.
