If you've got a static IP, why are you using DHCP? I have PacBell DSL and a static IP. All I have to do to get it going is: ifconfig eth1 63.194.251.2 broadcast 63.194.251.255 netmask 255.255.255.0 up route add default gw 63.194.251.254 "63.194.251.2" is my static IP, and "63.194.251.254" is PacBell's next-hop gateway. I recently got Telocity DSL service and love it -- at least from Windows 98 where I get SDSL speeds approaching 1MB/sec (yes, thats right, synchronous as in upload and download are each 1MB!!!). Regardless of whether I use the dhclient, or instead dhcpcd, I get the same result -- nothing. When I use dhcpcd, I can actually see the dsl modem's LAN and PC lights light up (which is what happens in Windows when the lease is obtained) but no lease is ever obtained. It just sits there for 60 seconds and then quits with a timeout. My ethernet card is configured properly as eth0 and ifconfig shows eth0 up. Route gives me a blank line. I am getting very frsutrated by the lack of documentation for both dhclient and dhcpcd (I have read the docs at isc.org and the man pages, as well as the short blurb in the SuSE help).
I am told by Telocity, which makes the modem and provides the DSL service, that Red Hat works "out of the box" with their service. Why not SuSE??!!! This should be a challenge to anyone interested in keeping Telocity customers on SuSE -- fix the problem please!!!
In the meantime, does anyone have any ideas about what to try?
Note that I have actually been assigned a static ip address and the dsl modem has a static gateway address. I have also tried configuring SuSE for a straight static TCP/IP connection (by using Yast to enter the ip address, gateway address, and netmask all as reported by winipcfg) instead of dhclient or dhpcdp. To no avail .... I get the same result (I see the lights go on, but no connection ... I can't even ping the gateway or any of the three nameservers (ping just hangs -- note though it doesn't say network is unreachable ... interesting)!!!).
