Still more searching - everything is not as it seems.
Per lspci -nn I have a Broadcom BCM4312 [14e4:4315]
The 4315 variant is not supported by the b43 module.
But a very new kernel module (wl.ko) does support it as well as most of what the b43 module supports.
It is available directly from Broadcom: http://www.broadcom.com/support/802.11/linux_sta.php
But it comes in a hybrid form.
I can't find it prepacked (compiled) for OpenSUSE 11.1. I have not even found a HowTo yet.
Does this exist?
If not, I'll download the "hybrid" and use the generic readme.
Thanks Greg
This is unbelievably painful.
I found instructions at: http://en.opensuse.org/HCL/Network_Adapters_(Wireless)/Broadcom_BCM43xx#Broa...
I have followed them but it still did not work:
1) I installed broadcom-wl from packman (brand new release is available)
2) I rebooted to the normal kernel -- no joy
3) I had noticed that during the broadcom-wl install it had installed a debug kernel and that was added to my grub menu. I booted it up. JOY, JOY, JOY
I updated the opensuse wiki to reflect the above. And I added a couple of references to the bc4312. http://en.opensuse.org/HCL/Network_Adapters_(Wireless)/Broadcom_BCM43xx This is my first experience with linux and wireless, so if one of you experts feel I messed up the wiki entry, please fix it. I also updated the HCL for broadcom.
