http://lordcow.org/Xorg.changelog.txt indicates for Debian, users of gfxcards lacking KMS drivers need a special package to retain suid root to continue access to Xorg. TW's xorg-x11-server changelog in 12 April seems to indicate a parallel package xorg-x11-server-wrapper, but zypper can't find any such package, at least for i586. Am I misunderstanding what's happened? Does anyone have mga video working in Xorg in TW?
I've packaged the wrapper script and fixed some security issues, the package is still pending security review, however. The reason for the wrapper is not that the Xserver is no longer SUID root - we have not set the Xserver SUID root for a long time, the reason is Gnome - or better to say gdm - which no longer start the Xserver as root but as the user logging in. With the other DMs no wrapper script should be required - even for hardware which still requires user space drivers.
This makes it sound like non-KDM drivers should work as long as GDM is not involved. I've never had GDM installed anywhere. KDE3 won't work, and neither will startx. :-( -- "The wise are known for their understanding, and pleasant words are persuasive." Proverbs 16:21 (New Living Translation) Team OS/2 ** Reg.
