Well, this is bizarre, but as it turns out, ALL the permissions in /etc had somehow been changed to 777 !!?? I changed them to 644 and now I can log in as root again. Of course, 644 isn't right either. But I have another SuSE box in the lab from which I can list the correct permissions in /etc. Now all I have to do is go in and change everything........sigh. And no, I cannot Ctl+Alt+F1 and login as root.
Also, when I open YAST2, it asks me for the root password, and this works just fine. This is really weird.

What KDE are you using? Did you build from konstruct? That happened to me when I used the construct KDM. I just scratched my head and decided it wasn't worth trying to figure out. Can you Ctl+Alt+F1 and login as root?
