I set up a Linux boxen at work as a intranet-http/smb/internet-gateway server. I am using diald and ip-masquerading to provide internet access to the rest of the office (class C ethernet network). Linux box: 192.168.1.5 (this is eth0) my windoze box: 192.168.1.1 other boxes: 192.168.1.x The problem I am having is that if diald is running the server responds to all incoming packets by establishing a ppp link -- and does not complete any request until a ppp link is up even if the packet destination is the Linux box (eth0). For example: If I ping the Linux box it will not respond to the ping until a ppp connection to our isp has been established.-- then it will respond. If I try to access one of the web pages on the server it likewise will not send the requested file until a ppp link has been made. If I kill diald then I don't have any routing problems, the server responds to pings, smb name resolution, and httpd requests instantly. Please help so that I don't have to resort to using a win95 box as the dial-on-demand gateway again. Thank you for your help.
