I searched for this file and its not found anywhere. It appears to be unecessary for xmms as root.
Try this.
mv .xmms xmms
Then try to start it. Because I've done nothing special and never had it do this..and I have like 42G of mp3's that it cycles through almost continuously when I'm at home.
The version I have installed is xmms-1.2.7-447 which I believe is still the default from the CD's.
