I noticed that the last messages from 'make install' appeared to be from lilo adding Linux/SuSE/etc so I did not run it again. It also copies System.map to /boot. I have just done a complete rebuild, etc, after running diags on the h/w. I also set the BIOS to LBA (not auto), used only ext2 (used reiserfs on all but /boot before), did not do 'make modules' / 'make modules_install'. Here are the error messages that I can see, these are unfortunately not the first messages, difficult to see as the fly past and are not logged in /var/log/messages: Segmentation fault Bad swap file entry 080c6118 and more of the same then swap_free : Trying to free nonexistent swap-page then Unable to handle kernel NULL pointer deference at virtual address 00000000 printing eip: c012b826 *pde = 00000000 Oops: 0002 CPU: 0 EIP: 0010:[<c012b826>] EFLAGS: 00010282 then displays registers ... Baffled. Booting the Previous 686 kernel or the SuSE kernel still works fine.
