VNC

Can someone point me in the right direction to get VNC working. I enabled on the server, then when I connect via Firefox it asks me for a password. I havn't established a password to begin with. When I put in the user password or root password it looks like it connects put the display is gray with an X marking the curser. If someone is using VNC could please point me in the right direction? Thanks
