You miss understand the use of automount. It is used to mount the partition. It is another method to mount an nfs mount, rather than /etc/fstab. When you use automount, if the mount is not available, you can have it wait or attempt to munt the /home later. If the mount is not used over an extended period of (timeout) it will automatically unmount the mount point thus conserving resources.
