Sure - I did say "often", not "always".
My main email account is provided by my ISP, but I also have a GMail account. I run my own IMAPS server for my main account. I also have a (yuck) outlook.office365 account for work.
Probably not an all too unusual situation. Anyway, you seem to believe an ISP and a mailhoster are legally in two different situations wrt their treatment of email traffic? Around here, while the access provider does have extra legal requirements, neither one is allowed to tamper with the contents of an email.
