Hi Jim,
FWIW, at the first sign of troubles like this, my approach is to pull the add-in video card and install, fresh, using just the built-in graphics hardware. Then, after the system has been completely installed and properly updated, I try adding the card back in to see if it gets handled any differently... perhaps like an upgrade ought to be handled by a sophisticated operating system.
This approach circumvents SaX2 getting misdirected or confused during the initial installation. It also ensures it is using the latest hardware database when probing and identifying the added-in "upgrade" card.
I may well try this.
Another benefit is it gets the system to a stable point where the built-in hardware is fully 'hooked' and (hopefully) controlled, as opposed to possibly acting like a phantom limb... physically attached but not configured or disabled correctly due to an inadequate (windoze only) or buggy BIOS "off" mechanism.
Actually I have suspected a buggy bios for some time now. The whole mother board can be flakey at times. Drops harddisks and cdroms at startup randomly. It flat out will not boot with ATI cards installed. -- James Smullins <floridaflier@cfl.rr.com>
