Actually, the very first response (from Rikard Johnels -- thanks!) solved the problem for me -- although I booted into the safe system, rather than putting in the kernel parameter for runlevel 3 (is there a difference?). Although, looking at the sax2 configuration now, I see it has set the monitor size back to 15". I think I'll let well enough alone for now :-). Unless someone can explain to me why a correct monitor setting kills communication with the keyboard?
