Maybe things changed; I'm on SUSE 9.1 (similarly to the OP!), and I have no user having such a file in her/his home folder. But I have e.g. ~/.xsession-errors
.X.err is created when you log in in text mode and use "startx" to launch the X server. .xsession-errors is used when you log in through the graphical environment
