Exactly that bug will (hopefully) be fixed completely.
OK, I haven't seen an update for X yet, but I did get the new ATI driver, 8.26.18, released on 26 June 2006. This has solved the freezing issue I had when switching between X and console. I'm still puzzled at why my FPS in gears is about 300 lower than it was in 10.0. I'm getting around 630 FPS in window mode, and around 120-130 FPS on fgl_glxgears.
