Hello. Being new to Linux, the technical issues relating to firewall settings are difficult to understand. Advice on setting up an effective firewall will be appreciated. The PC runs SuSE linux 8.1 running Bind9, DHCP server & Samba. Internet connection is made using Pengaol, which enables a connection to AOL under Linux. After installing SuSEfirewall2 & configuring the basic settings using YsAT2, the following message is generated. The settings are : Internal Network : eth0 External Network : ppp0. /*****************************************************************************************/ First install & Yast2 security settings: /etc/init.d/network start returned 0 (Success.) Setting up network interfaces: lo ..done eth0 IP/Netmask: 192.168.1.1 / 255.255.255.0 ..done /etc/init.d/SuSEfirewall2_final start returned 0 (Success.) Starting Firewall Initialization (phase 3 of 3) Warning: detected activated named, enabling FW_SERVICE_DNS! You still have to allow tcp/udp port 53 on internal, dmz and/or external. Warning: detected activated dhcpd, enabling FW_SERVICE_DHCPD! Warning: detected activated samba, enabling FW_SERVICE_SMB! You still have to allow tcp port 139 on internal, dmz and/or external. iptables: No chain/target/match by that name iptables: No chain/target/match by that name ..done /*****************************************************************************************/ Then, using the sysconfig icon on yast two, the Quickmode is et to "Yes". Restarting the fiewwall generates the following message: /*****************************************************************************************/ First install & Yast2 security setting, second quickmode=yes /etc/init.d/network start returned 0 (Success.) Setting up network interfaces: lo ..done eth0 IP/Netmask: 192.168.1.1 / 255.255.255.0 ..done /etc/init.d/SuSEfirewall2_final start returned 0 (Success.) Starting Firewall Initialization (phase 3 of 3) Try `iptables -h' or 'iptables --help' for more information. Bad argument `reject_func' ..done /*****************************************************************************************/ Can the following be explained or clarified : - While PC is connected to the internet, is the firewall effective? - A simple interpretation of the above messages - Do any other settings have to be amended? A sample configuration file for others with a similar setup would be appreciated. Thank you for reading and for any assistance you can provide.
