[SLE] kppp after 7.0 upgrade

Hi everyone. The SuSE 7.0 upgrade from 6.4 went well apart from the immediate disconnection on trying to connect via kppp. Wvdial works fine however from root and I can browse and get e-mail as an normal user.. Can anyone help? kppp reports that 'kppp deamon died unexpectedly' or 'Timeout expired while waiting for the PPP interface to come up!' Random messages. Everything was working great under 6.4. Any help much appreciated.
