The computer magazine Jürgen referred to (c't) warned that low level formating older hard disks (as a rule of thumb hardisks < 504 MB should be considered old) can destroy them.

Thanks Stefan I dld the file to use in the future. IN the mean time Ive found an uncontamminated disk <grin> that I installed on.... so I dont have to deal with this rite now. However for what its worth a fellow in my lug mentioned this method of wiping a drive. I figgured some on this list would like to know. whne I wipe the drive Ill report back here ;-) thanks again ============================= If you do have another unix box on hand try: dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/hda /dev/hda (in the of var) being the device you want to wipe clean.
