Andreas, I solved this problem by searching various Linux discussion groups. Kernel-smp had the most examples. Apparently, this is a common problem with Compaq servers related to the Compaq BIOS and the Kernel, and having nothing to do with SuSE at all... In addition to booting with apic=off, apm=off and pci=biosirq, it is most important to set the Operating System parameter in the BIOS (accessed via F10 at boot, or by booting a Compaq SmartStart CDROM) to "SCO Unixware 7". (Probably SCO is using this in their lawsuits--only half joking!) Once this was done, both the 8.1 and 8.2 installers chose the SMP kernel on their own. Thanks again for your help.
