Sorry ive not been following this thread, so I may have missed it - is the 3rd IDE port supplied by a highpoint controller of some kind? If so are you running an up to date kernel, as I used to have problems with my highpoint controller until more recent kernels.
<snip> I am running the default kernel in SuSE7.3... and as far as I know, no highpoint controller on my IDE. Hardware is fairly up-to-date - ABIT KT7-Raid MB (about a year old), AMD Athalon 1Ghz (about a year old), 700+ MB RAM, hda is 8Gig and running Win2K, hdb is 60Gig and a network share drive, hdc is a 40 Gig Linux drive. LILO written to the MBR. Basically, I started the thread with a question about the Reboot dropdown menu not working. Anders Johansson suggested that I look at the LILO config. lilo -q reports back: Warning: BIOS drive 0x82 may not be accessible linux * failsafe nt memtest86 I thought maybe the warning was due to a problem I have been having with my 60Gig network share drive (not being able to mount the partitions). I re-fdisked it this morning, and that fixed the mounting problems, and I thought also the DMA errors as well. Back to LILO.... David Herman suggested that having Linux on a 3rd or 4th disk may generate the warning in lilo... If I run lilo without options, I get this: =-=-=-=-=-=-= Warning: BIOS drive 0x82 may not be accessible Warning: BIOS drive 0x82 may not be accessible Warning: BIOS drive 0x82 may not be accessible Warning: BIOS drive 0x82 may not be accessible Warning: BIOS drive 0x82 may not be accessible Added linux * Warning: BIOS drive 0x82 may not be accessible Warning: BIOS drive 0x82 may not be accessible Added failsafe Added nt Warning: BIOS drive 0x82 may not be accessible Added memtest86 -=-=-=-=-=-=-= lilo -T geom gives me: =-=-=-=-=- bios=0x00, cylinders=80, heads=2, sectors=18 bios=0x80, cylinders=1027, heads=255, sectors=63 EDD packet calls allowed bios=0x81, cylinders=7299, heads=255, sectors=63 EDD packet calls allowed bios=0x82, cylinders=4865, heads=255, sectors=63 EDD packet calls allowed =-=-=-=-=- 0x82 is the 40 Gig drive I have Linux installed on. It is definitely accessable, since I am using it to run Linux pretty much 24/7. So... does this mean there is a real problem with 0x82 (hdc)? Is LILO just being over-cautious because I have Linux on my 3rd drive? Is all this linked to my original question about why the dropdown menu for Reboot in the X-login screen is empty? C.
