I am trying to upgrade my kernel to 2.6.0-test11 and 2.4.23 getting the same error during boot with each. I am not sure if this is a problem with my kernel config file or my grub.conf, but I am inclinded to believe that it is my .config since I copied and modified the kernel name and removed the initrd line. The error that I am receiving is: VFS: Cannot open root device "sdb" or unknown-block(0,0) please append a correct "root=" boot option Kernel Panic: VFS: Unable to mount rood fs on unknown-block(0,0) I have tried some many things, I don't remember what I have and have not. Also, being that I can not mount root, I do not have the ability to tell you with 100% certainty that any device has started.
