Yes, your intuition's right. :) The complete kernel sources in the huge linux-2.2.3.tar.gz you probably just recently d/led is equivellent to 2.2.0 plus all the patches up to 2.2.3; you can safely save yourself the d/l time and get the patch file for 2.2.4 and apply it to the 2.2.3 source.
