Hi there everyone,
We're looking to set up a videoconferencing link here, and it would be great if I could get people's opinions of some things.
First off is the speed of internet connection. Currently we're on a 56k dialup link... which clearly isn't going to be able to cope with the demands of videoconferencing. Question here: will ISDN do the job well, or will we have to look for something with higher bandwidth? If so, what would you suggest? Unfortunately we're going to have to wait a while to get ADSL in our area, and I'm not sure about a cable modem, but it is a possibility.
I've seen NetMeeting work on Cable modems between Hawaii and Virginia, and I would say it is still experimental. It was pretty jumpy - kinda like the video broadcast from the Gemini and Apollo missions. I would hate to see it over a 56K line.
Second - since the other users are currently using Windows as their OS of 'choice' ;-) they will probably end up using MS NetMeeting for the actual videoconferencing. By the time this videoconferencing system is set up, there should be a Linux firewall system providing the gateway to the 'net. I am aware that it is possible to get NetMeeting to go through the firewall, so this shouldn't be a problem.
Wanna bet? I've scoured the 'Net, and have only found one whay to get NetMeeting (using the H.323 protocol) to go through a Linux firewall, and that is with the ip_masq_h3231 module, which only works with 2.0 kernels. I have combined it with the Linux Router Project with much success. If you know of another Linux solution, please fill me in.
