Sorry for the confusion. I thought I'd made it plain that I was crashing someone else's party, which medwinz had already crashed.

No you didn't :) I think it run also in ipw2100 in WPA, i will check and give Fred the result. Just wait because someone else use that laptop :)
Yesterday I update the compat-wireless > http://linuxwireless.org/en/users/Download, and it runs much better. I even can capture the traffic in monitoring mode using Kismet.
I'm sure that ipw2100 also supported on this drivers.
I confirm, even without compat-wireless driver, ipw2200 is working here. Also in WPA2. Here are the lspci, dmesg, and iwlist result linux-vevk:/home/cldk # lspci | grep 2200 06:06.0 Network controller: Intel Corporation PRO/Wireless 2200BG Network Connection (rev 05) linux-vevk:/home/cldk # dmesg | grep 2200 ipw2200: Intel(R) PRO/Wireless 2200/2915 Network Driver, 1.2.2kmprq ipw2200: Copyright(c) 2003-2006 Intel Corporation ipw2200: Detected Intel PRO/Wireless 2200BG Network Connection ipw2200: Detected geography ZZR (14 802.11bg channels, 0 802.11a channels) ipw2200: Failed to send SCAN_ABORT: Command timed out. ipw2200: Failed to send CARD_DISABLE: Command timed out. ipw2200: Failed to send SCAN_ABORT: Command timed out. ipw2200: Failed to send CARD_DISABLE: Command timed out. ipw2200: Intel(R) PRO/Wireless 2200/2915 Network Driver, 1.2.2kmprq ipw2200: Copyright(c) 2003-2006 Intel Corporation ipw2200: Detected Intel PRO/Wireless 2200BG Network Connection ipw2200: Radio Frequency Kill Switch is On: ipw2200: Detected geography ZZR (14 802.11bg channels, 0 802.11a channels) ipw2200: Intel(R) PRO/Wireless 2200/2915 Network Driver, 1.2.2kmprq ipw2200: Copyright(c) 2003-2006 Intel Corporation ipw2200: Detected Intel PRO/Wireless 2200BG Network Connection ipw2200: Detected geography ZZR (14 802.11bg channels, 0 802.11a channels) linux-vevk:/home/cldk # iwlist eth1 scan eth1 Scan completed : Cell 01 - Address: 00:1E:E5:75:D4:77 ESSID:"gandalf" Protocol:IEEE 802.11bg Mode:Master Frequency:2.462 GHz (Channel 11) Encryption key:on Bit Rates:1 Mb/s; 2 Mb/s; 5.5 Mb/s; 6 Mb/s; 9 Mb/s 11 Mb/s; 12 Mb/s; 18 Mb/s; 24 Mb/s; 36 Mb/s 48 Mb/s; 54 Mb/s Quality=84/100 Signal level=-45 dBm IE: IEEE 802.11i/WPA2 Version 1 Group Cipher : CCMP Pairwise Ciphers (1) : CCMP Authentication Suites (1) : PSK Extra: Last beacon: 8ms ago Maybe monitor mode is not working not try yet. But I believe if I use compat-wireless it will work. :) Like iwl3945, I also manually type : # modprobe -r ipw2200 # modprobe ipw2200 reconnect the AP manually.
