However, one thing that's making me a little crazy is the fact that I can't keep Netscape running now unless I'm on line. I never had this problem with RedHat. I've tried the stock RPM that came with SuSE and the 4.05, 4.06 and 4.5 tarballs and if I'm not on line the program either freezes on startup or will freeze after just a few minutes of use. [...]
Well, if you solve this one, puhleeze post the answer. I struggled with this problem for a long time without success (of course, those were newbie struggles).
I had config set to "Don't load a Web page at startup; mail server & newsserver=localhost" and the sucker still froze as soon as I opened a "Reply" or "New mail" window.
what about "news" ? this was not a hanger to me, but it triggered my dial on demand line for no reason. thre are .newsrc* files in user's home dir, that can be deleted. for Chris suggestion (other thread) to reinstall, I add: remove the .netscape directory in your home dir, and let netscape create it new. This finally did the trick the two times i fought against netscape. you have to edit the preferences again and late copy your addressbook. Or, before that, alternativly create an alter ego (other *new* user) and call netscape from there. If it works to your satisfaction, kill the .netscape directory in your home direktory.
