Well, obviously it is collecting the SMART data of your drive and making them available via udisks.
b) can/should I stop it?
Disabling polling might still work: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/udisks/+bug/638765 Furthermore, udisks offers the --inhibit-all-polling option, too.
