Please help me solve my problem, shortly described in the subject. Today I updated my Tumbleweed (with GNOME) on an ASUS K5001UX laptop. All went fine until reboot. I got an apparent command line login and a mouse cursor in the middler of the screen. The command line did not accept any input, the mouse cursor moves. I suspect this is the fault of the nouveau driver. Why do you think so? With newer gfxchips, commonly the default driver is "modesetting", which is built into the Xorg server, negating need to have chip-specific xf86-video-<chipname> installed. If xf86-video-nouveau is installed, you could try 'zypper rm xf86-video-nouveau' to have it used instead of nouveau. If it is not installed, you could try 'zypper in xf86-video-nouveau' to have it used instead of modesetting. Neither of these suggestions are by themselves appropriate if you have the proprietary NVidia driver installed.
Can I get back X without reinstalling the whole thing?
Probably.
If you Ctrl-Alt-F[1-6], do you get a login prompt that works?
If you can login, if /var/log/Xorg.0.log or ~/.local/share/xorg/Xorg.#.log exists, share it with us via http://susepaste.org or equivalent.
If yes, what happens if you login and execute 'startx' as normal user, and if that fails as root user?
If you do not get a login prompt that works from Ctrl-Alt-Fn, try in the Grub menu to choose the last entry, troubleshooting/emergency/rescue/failsafe mode. What happens when you do?
Hi, I could not deal with my problem until now. it is not solved yet. What I did: removed xf86-video-nouveau (which was installed) - no change. I could start a terminal with ctl-alt F2, and I could login. Startx did not work, neither for the superuser.I tried to set nomodeset in the boot parameters upon booting. Did not work. The only change was that only the mouse cursor appeared in front of a black screen, and text lines did not. Tried rescue/failsafe mode both for the 4.13. and the previous 4.12.11 kernel. No success. I have internet acces and have susepaste. I learn. how to use it. Regards, Albert
