I've heard about a company that's specialized in a mini-linux distribution. Apparently they succeeded to fit a whole operating system on a floppy. How the hell did they do that? How can you configure/compile a kernel that small?
I'd assume the filesystem is a compressed image on the floppy and everything expands into a ramdisk. I've been meaning to try this out myself, IIRC there is an overview in the bootdisk howto.

Actually some of these floppy distros are pretty cool for a utilities tool, router / firewall whatever. A friend and I setup freesco which was installed on a 486 no hd, no cd, just a floppy and 16mb of ram.
