They have a couple packages that overlap (libxslt, libxml,libart_lgpl) and don't want to screw up either setup.
If you've been able to do this, whose KDE packages did you use? KDE's or SUSE's? Are there other things off of SUSE's FTP servers you needed to install to be completely up to date?

(sig line snipped) Greg, I am not running Ximian, but I have a few tips... I don't know if there a lots of Ximian Desktop 2 users on this list. Could be. However, the most frequesnt qestions are about KDE, which was (is) SuSE's main desktop. SuSE kind of supports Gnome, but people like James Ogley (james_at_usr-local-bin.org) got so disgusted he started his own Gnome rpm depository where he puts the new packages he has built. http://www.rubberturnip.org.uk/ James is our resident expert on Gnome. In general, linux is pretty smart about keeping various libraries separate. It is done thru naming conventions, and linkers, etc. So in general you can have multiple libraries with no problem. And as I understand it Ximian's has their name in their library rpm's as was recently discussed on this list: Subject: Re: [SLE] how do I get rid of XD2 http://lists.suse.com/archive/suse-linux-e/2003-Sep/0043.html So I wouldn't worry about that.
whose KDE packages did you use?
I use SuSE's. Given you are are running SuSE 8.2 I would start out with the KDE from the CD/DVD. Only after i got that running would I consider upgrading to to a stable version. Even then, if you have been reading this list you know that some people have been experiencing problems with KDE 3.2 (in fact there is one thread: "Is KDE 3.2 ready for prime time?" ) I use "kpackage" to install a lot of my rpm's. You are probably using something else. But use something which shows you if all the dependencies are being meet. If they are not find out why. You may need to install something else, or compile your own package. I strong recommend not using "rpm --force" in it's many incarnations. I know lot's of users do, I don't as a policy. (I have used "--oldpackage" and i keep my rpms so I can re-install) The other thing to do is make sure your box is up to date on security patches using fou4s (my choice), YOU, apt, red carpet or whatever....
