Are you running any kind of firewall on your computer? If so, you might need to adjust your firewall's rules so that it doesn't block access to the port that MySQL is trying to use (by default, TCP 3306). If the book you bought has a troubleshooting section, perhaps you should read through that to see if it can help you determine what the problem is.
