That's two of us, Jethro. I used the same procedure on the Beast as I used on the Sony, when I did a clean install on both of them. I can talk to the majordomo ok - it responds to my email when I reply to its verification request, but the list server rejects my submissions with a "501" error - badly formed return address. The badly formed address was "jerry@jerrykreps@jlkreps.net" Sendmail or KMail is taking my login name and the return address I put into Kmail and forming a new address, somehow. I've set DM in /etc/sendmail.cf to null, to my FQHOSTNAME, to my email address, to my domain name, to my host name.... I'm thinking of beginning to look for another email package for the Beast. The Sony works fine, otherwise I wouldn't be able to communicate with the list. It's amazing how following the same procedure on two different machines works on one and not on the other. ??? Making adjustments to the sendmail.cf file is total folley. That file is so cryptic it should make the CIA proud. I've also noticed on the Beast that I can''t switch to SMTP. Sometimes Linux is as easy as falling off a log, but if something doesn't work out of the box it can be a bear. JLK On Tuesday 03 April 2001 18:58, Jethro Cramp wrote:

It really depends upon how the mail was sent. Do you use postfix or sendmail or does it go right out to your ISP?
No I don't although I have postfix installed. When I have the time I think that might be the next thing to get setup. Long term goal is to become comfortable with Mutt and use that as my MUA. However I've got to practise with it for awhile before I'll be ready to leave a GUI mail client behind.
I still think it's kmail adding that line, as kmail is the only program in the chain which knows you by that email address. It is not part of the message body as the message is being transmitted, but an envelope address (which explains why it isn't mentioned below). This may be what qmail is picking up on.
The more I think about it the more I think you're right: the offending program is probably KMail who is playing silly games with the envelope. I am going to run some tests this afternoon using only one e-mail address at a time. I will delete the others from KMail.
I presume you've checked through all the kmail options?
Yes :)
As I said, I can't really help in that respect. Sorry, Chris
Thanks anyway.
