Firstly I have an IBM APTIVA L31. I know that there is quite a lot of proprietary hardware/software on it, and that installing/running LINUX will not be flawless on it, I want to point out that I will be using the computer as a gateway, and a server for other things.........
My experience with Aptivias.... not good. Id estimate you having a difficult time getting the sound (mwave) or modem to work w/o the aptivas software. Once I tried to eliminate the aptiva installion and just install w95 ...on a friends machine, it was ok untill the modem was called up or sound. Do you have the Mwave? If so I seriously doubt if it would work
Actually, even though it is IBM and IBM is very proprietary, for some reason this box does not contain too much proprietary hardware. For example. The modem is a LUCENT based winmodem so there is very little hope of getting it working in LINUX. SVGA is a TRIDENT 3DImage 975 so it should work without any probs in LINUX. Sound is from a CRYSTAL 4232 CHIPSET, so once again there should be no probs there. CDROM is SONY EIDE ATAPI interface, so no probs there.
I cant say for sure but Id guess the SuSE cdrom isnt bootable ;-)
Then how come "LI" came?! I personally think that the boot sector of the CDROM is buggered up.
If you look at any messages on the list there are links to suses site which Im sure they have boot disks available for dl. Id be pretty amazed if you convert the Aptiva to Linux good luck rob Bookmarks <A HREF="http://www.connix.com/~dizzy73/LBM.htm"><A HREF="http://www.connix.com/~dizzy73/LBM.htm</A">http://www.connix.com/~dizzy73/LBM.htm</A</A>>
