I upgraded to 11.3 and apart from some minor quirks (disable pulseaudio to get sound, add nomodeset boot parameter to get anything at all) which incidentally may be absolute showstoppers to the uninitiated, I am left with a problem that I haven't been able to solve so far.
There is a problem with the X server that I cannot quite nail down. After rebooting the Xserver comes up fine and I get the normal kdm login screen. But when I log out, the X-server does not restart properly and I am left with a frozen black screen. I can still use the text consoles f1-f6. I can go back to level 3, which frees the graphic terminal, but after that the X server won't come up any more. Switching sessions instead of logging out gives the same result. The Xorg.0.log suggests to disable autoadddevice, but that disables ALL hotplugging too, so that is no viable option.
It appears to be a known problem (bug 638924) with the intel I845 graphics card family. It requires in some instances the "intellegacy" driver. The remedy proved to be to remove xorg.conf (that should not be used anyhow) from /etc/X11, install the package xorg-x11-driver-video-intel-legacy-2.9.1-1.9.i586 and add Driver "intellegacy" to the configuration file 50-device.conf Lots of thanks and praise to Stefan Dirsch of bugzilla who nailed this. -- Jos van Kan registered Linux user #152704 -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
