Can anyone vouch for the ease-of-use factor with these cards? I've seen them for $60 US and under, and was wondering if they were worth the investment. Those of you paying close attention may have noticed that I started out with a Voodoo Banshee by Creative Labs and I have since moved back to an SiS6326 card I had laying around. The SiS is still fairly cranky, compared to my ol' reliable S3 ViRGE DX card, and I wonder if the Permedia is any more or less cranky.
Just a shot in the dark. I appreciate any assistance.
A shot in the dark is a very good description of your chances for getting the Permedia2 to work... I never got my Permedia2 to do better than 640x480 (16 colors), which was totally useless with the standard configuration of the windowmanagers (There was NO other way to shut down X than the 3-finger grip and most windows were larger than the screen) Of course it is possible to configure the WMs to be usable at 640x480, but remember, I was (and still am) a newbie, more or less. This specific card was, however, acting weirdly in DOS as well. Many older DOS games could not be convinced that it was SVGA- capable or VESA-compatible... even with display-doctor. I finally replaced the 8MB Permedia2 card with a 4MB S3 ViRGE/GX2 which is happily doing 1280x1024 in 16bit colors. The old DOS games work now, and in WingCommander5 in Win95 it gives better 3D performance and more options... If I were you, I'd go for something else...
