Let's try the following:
you have bootsplash installed? #> rpm -q bootsplash
And the fitting branding package #> rpm -q bootsplash-branding-openSUSE
The bootsplash service is enable? #> chkconfig splash_early (splash_early actually does not do anything). #> chkconfig splash
One more thing for you to verify: The content of /etc/sysconfig/bootsplash make sure it's enabled in there and that it has a Theme activated (which exists in /etc/bootsplah/themes If it was disabled here, you'll have to make the #> mkinitrd -s 1024x768 again.
