Can someone recommend what is a good video card to use for openSUSE? I know ATI after a while drops support for cards in their drivers so that is out of the question. What about Nvida? I was looking at GeForce 9500 GT based cards because they are reasonably priced but should I expect decent driver support in Linux for a reasonable amount of time?
That's what I got for my new computer, MSI make.. Works out of the box. 3D is just activating the nvidia repo and running you (on 11.2 at least). Caveats? With nv driver (open) I can not hibernate, X hangs at 100% one core on restore. With nvidia driver it hibernates fine, provided you switch to text mode first. Of course, YMMV.
The card will not be used for playing games but it should support the vendor's drivers, let 3d acceleration work in Linux and work well with Compiz (or whatever the desktop effects are now called.)
Yes, compiz is activated by default as soon as you load the 3D driver. It scared me you can't imagine how, I thought my new display was broken, horrible small refresh or something, because the windows "wobled". Result: I uninstalled compiz right away. - -- Cheers, Carlos E.
