How do you set up a network which allows users to share a 'server' which has a modem and network card ,kind of like a gateway but dial up? When I connect using kppp to my ISP they assigns an IP address for my machine how does this affect the Network?
As you can guess I'm not really a 'network guy' so any help would be appreciated in most simple terms!
(Also I'm trying to setup the following system any help much appreciated!!!!!)
1 server acting as file/print/fax server
Realy easy to set up. Go into yast , and install nfs (network file system , then it will ask for the configeration info, ie the ipaddress and netmask , ext.... Once this is done , go into the export file and add in the path and directories you c\want to share.(assuming you have allready created the dirs. Then go back and install the samba package,you need this to talk smb with the windows world. It may be easier to just load linux aon two machines just to check thay are workibng via ping and ifconfig (opconfig in windows) then configur smn.conf wiith what you want to share and load the smbd and nmbd deamons. that will allow your win95/8 machines to see your linux box and talk with it. Note there is an enry you must chang in win 98 to set it to plain passords otherwise win98 wont see the linux side of the network. there is a fix for this at samba.org I think , I havent goten to that yet.
4 workstations probably win95/nt connected to server (2/3 dial in accounts.... i.e people from home can dial in and use services.) See Samba on how to do this.
Some sort of fax system to scan documents/print to fax probably hylafax but needs win clients. Network printing.
any suggestions on best configuration.

I have Suse on my Libretto when I put the machine into standby and later restart the machine either hangs or I basically cannot restart Kde until I reboot is this normal, are there any work arounds?

Yes, this is also possible with a modem. Just use "diald" for the automatic dialin.
