I just use a soft RAID 1 with a pair of internal SATA drives. It was easy to set up during my openSuSE 10.3 install. This won't give you snapshots or SneakerNET. But you don't have to do anything to back up.
Repeat after me: Mirroring is NOT a backup strategy. When you or software accidentally DELETE or CORRUPT by normal means, what happens to the mirrored image of that file? So... then, where's your backup copy?
