I checked with vuntz (the upstream maintainer of shared-mime-info) and these mime types are indeed invalid wrt. spec, but update-mime-database notices this, outputs the warning and continues, so they should not be responsible for your messed up file type identification.
I'll push upstream KDE to put its mimetypes in order, anyway.

Thanks for the insight Will, I don't know if it completes successfully or not. Using the verbose option, it looks like it completes, but I don't think it completes successfully because something is totally FUBAR with the gnome mime database. Everything (I mean.. e v e r y t h i n g ) except folders are shown as "plain text document". Have a look at the following two nautilus screenshots: http://www.3111skyline.com/dl/bugs/gnome/all-plain-text-document.jpg http://www.3111skyline.com/dl/bugs/gnome/all-plain-text-document1.jpg Needless to say, trying to launch or preview anything from a filemanager in gnome fails miserably. Right now, everything tries to open as a "Karbon 14" file.... Could you also pass this along to the upstream guys. Thanks. -- David C. Rankin, J.D.,P.E.
