Hi, the easiest way to install programs on Opensuse is to use yast. 1.What you need to do is to place your installation dvd in the dvd drive once the computer has been booted and is up and running (don't boot from it). Then look for the lizard icon on the lower left if you are using kde 3.5, or the blue kde icon on the lower left of your desktop if you are using kde 4.x, then click on it to open up the kde menu. 2. When the list opens up, look for the computer tab and click on it. 3. At the top of the list that opens up, find Administrator Settings (Yast) and click on it. 4. A little prompt box will open up that will ask for your Administrator password. That is the same as your superuser password, or your root password. They are all synonyms that mean the same thing. Type the password in the box and then hit the enter key, or click on the box that says OK. 5. The Yast control center will open up. Check that Software is highlighted on the left. If it isn't, click on it. On the right side of the list, click on Software management. 6. In the search box, type in Thunderbird, or any other program that you wish to install. Then click on search, and yast will find the program for you in the list of programs presented on the right side of the yast window. 7. To install a program, thunderbird for example, find thunderbird in the list on the right. There will be a little box next to the program name to click in to designate that you wish to install the program. Once you click in the box, there will be a checkmark that appears in the box to indicate that the program will be installed. 8. On the bottom right, find a button that says accept. Click on it, and yast will begin the installation process. The program will first check for dependencies, and will present a list of dependencies that must be installed along with the program you desire to install. Click to accept those dependencies, and yast will install the program that you desire, along with its dependencies. 9. If you don't find the program listed in the program listing, it may be because you don't have the proper repositories enabled for yast to search in. I will send you a list of the repositories that I use in a seperate email if you desire. Please note that you need a high speed internet connection to use repositories other than the software included on the dvd. I hope that this helps you.
