And there's the matter of bandwidth and power consumption. For some reason uploading via USB seems to eat camera power. Treating the card as a mountable store -- looks like disk -- means that there are plenty of tools for examining it. "Just another file system and files". Gwenview, Dolphin, and tools to examine the EXIF -- exifgrep(1) I used to do this with all my cameras but a while back a pin on my CFcard reader got bent and broke. The one camera that uses CFCards now has to upload via USB.
