Hubert, Thanks for the advice -- and superfast response :-) I changed char-major-14 to off (and did a rmmod sound to be sure), but OSS still complains about "soundbase" and "soundshield," telling me to rmmod soundbase and rmmod soundshield. Is there any way to disable & remove soundbase/soundshield? Also, the OSS homepage says that we need to do a "set CONFIG_PCI=y" to enable PCI_BIOS support in the Linux kernel. Any idea what they're talking about?? Glenn Hubert Mantel wrote:

I've been trying to run OSS to configure my Ensonique AudioPCI soundcard, but I get the following error messages on ". /oss-install" rmmod soundbase device loaded or in use rmmod soundshield device loaded or in use
OSS driver is already loaded ./soundconf: line 111: 1074 Segmentation fault. Use soundoff to unload it and try again.
Of course, executing soundoff has no effect, because no OSS driver is loaded at this point.
Maybe running soundconf triggers the kerneld which loads the standard linux sound driver. Try modifying /etc/conf.modules from:
alias char-major-14 sound
to
alias char-major-14 off
this will prevent the kerneld to load the sound module when the device Maj 14 is accessed. To be sure, do a "rmmod sound" afterwards.
I'm using the current, Webpage version of OSS (*not* the version shipped with 5.2) because it supports Ensonique AudioPCI. I've also installed all the packages in the sound section (midi support, etc) -- perhaps I should delete these packages and try again.
Any solutions or ideas from anybody, or from Bodo, et. al. ?
Otherwise, 5.2 is fantastic. Can't wait for 6.
