Just for information, if your machine hadn't worked with 64bit, and you tried booting the 64 bit installer, it wouldn't even have started - there would have been no risk for installing a version that ran half-well.

I'm afraid you'll have to reinstall from scratch with the 64bit installation disc. An 'upgrade' from 32 to 64bit, while theoretically possible, is very likely to cause issues where you really have to know what you're doing to solve them. It's not something that is supported, or is ever likely to be supported, by an 'official' tool.
