Hello folk, First I'm very very newbie in OpenSuse. I used to work on Debian and Ubuntu. Now, I have a remote accessible (only ssh) Suse Server running under 8.2 version. I have to install apache2 and php5 in this server but I found that the best solution is first to upgrade the version to a more recent. So I have questions: - can I upgrade the version from 8.2 to 11 without a risk of lost hand? - if it is not possible, what version I can to upgrade to at most? It seems that the minimal version available actually is 10.0 (is that right?) - and finally, where can I find a good documentation for newbie for upgrading (Open)Suse without losting hand on the server?
Thanks in advance friends,
manou
10.2 is just going into end of life, so minimum is really is 10.3. (Unless you are thinking about SLES which is a different story). The differences between 8.2 and 11.0 are so significant that in such a situation I would be very hesitant to suggest the upgrade route even though in most scenarios it is my preferred approach. If you do not have physical access to the box I would be doubly hesitant. I would suggest you backup all data, configuration and account info and get printout of the partition and mount info and then do a clean install. Also find out whether any non-Distro stuff has been installed. , do dumps of any database info (do not just backup database files). If you have a spare box, doing a test run with the 8.2 setup as a start point may be very helpful. Good luck. - -- ============================================================================== I have always wished that my computer would be as easy to use as my telephone. My wish has come true.
