It helped a lot, Jerry. And thanks also to punt for the quick answers from both of you. It was easy to configure in rc.config and kdmrc once I knew where to look. Now I am trying to figure out how to cut down the number of users in the login screen to just "root" and "karcher". Thanks again.
If your KDE works (i.e. it comes up correctly when you type "startx"), you can start it via XDM or KDM. You just need to set the default runlevel to 3 for a SuSE box. The line from my /etc/inittab looks like this :
# default runlevel id:3:initdefault:
You can use YAST or edit rc.config to choose between XDM or KDM. The keyword is WINDOWMANAGER.
