Update: 1. Inserted SNET Primary and Secondary DNS numbers into adsl-start. Could not make connection. Experienced Time Outs each time. 2. Changed back to inserting "server" into the DNS section of adsl-start. Connected successfully. Using Lynx, I tried to connect to Yahoo using the numbered IP address http://64.58.76.179. Lynx attempted to connect to the site stating something close to "Sending request HTTP address; Waiting for Response." Lynx then got stuck and was not able to receive response to connect to the site. 3. Larry Holland suggested that I try at prompt: route add -net 0.0.0.0 netmask 0.0.0.0 gw 64.252.1.200 metric 1 This produced a network error message regarding SIOCADDRT. Not really sure what that is.....I looked for a manpage, but there's no entry for it. Hmmm, this is very frustrating. I can create an open connection, and send requests for responses, but I don't seem to be able to receive any packets back through my adsl connection. Also, I tried to reach http://linuxlife.org using Opera browser, but Opera did the same thing---- was stuck attempting to load data from the website for 12 minutes before I closed out. Might this have anything to do with the problem?----- When I boot up, one of the messages I see indicates, "Starting PCNFS/BWNFS daemon requires portmapper failed ("failed" is written in red) I believe this has to do with allowing shadow passwords in user profiles, but not sure if it has any effect upon dial-up or ethernet connections. I don't know what to do next..... Mike Flug michael.flug@snet.net
