The module refused to compile, complaining that it's designed for 2.4.0 and my is 2.4.0-4GB (what the hell is the -4GB doing here?).
Is there anyway to remove the -4GB by other means?
I am going to give it a last try, and if fail, I will reinstall with both 2.2.18 and 2.4.0(-4GB) kernel, maybe that is faster. :(
Find the file /usr/src/linux/include/linux/version.h and try changing the the line: #define UTS_RELEASE "2.4.0-4GB" to: #define UTS_RELEASE "2.4.0" and see if that works.

Just to share my joy, the installation of 7.1pro on my office's notebook (Acer TravelMate 734TL) is very smooth and no problem, everything (sound, video, Ethernet port, USB mouse) are working with only one exception: the built-in Lucent win modem.
I tried the Lucent driver but it refused to work and complaint on Not working under Kernel 2.4?
See: http://walbran.org/sean/linux/stodolsk/ download the latest driver (ltmodem-5.78e.tar.gz) and compile it. There are some specific instuctions for compiling for 2.4 in there as well.
