I noticed that too. Your messages landed in archive :-) It seems that is a problem with system clock. I had unstable clock until started ntp daemon. The ntp demon will keep time, but that is only workaround.
I just found that the box for "use local timezone" was set by default in kde4 and instead of using US eastern time it tried to use the ...

Here happened the same, in the same scenario. It is a bug. Right click on icon, select properties, click on document icon that replaced trashbin icon. It will open icon selection dialog.
