Hello Daniel, on Wednesday, September 06, 2000 at 16:30:35 -0500, you sat in front of your keyboard and wrote:
Is it possible upgrade a SuSE 6.4 system with the new 7.0 CD by booting from the CD and telling it to update the existing 7.0 system?
Yes.
If it's possible, is it practical? Can it be done while the 6.4 system is up and running?
If you want to do a complete update (ie: including the base packages), I recommend you to do it by rebooting and booting from the 7.0 install CD then choosing update from the menues.
Is there a more practical way of updating/upgrading a system without purchasing every new boxed set that comes out and bringing the system down or rebooting?
You can buy updates CDs.
More accurately is there a simple way of doing this?
I know that updating the kernel needs a reboot, I had a RH61 system with 2.2.12 and updated the kernel to 2.3.5x, that required a boot.
But what about packages like xfree, netscape, gimp? Does Yast handle
Most of the packages doesn't requires a reboot when updated.
this through it's software update/installation menu if you have the latest .rpm of that package? Can an update of xfree be done from _one_ .rpm?
No, the complete xfree system is split in several packages.
Does the ftp option in the Yast menu handle this?
Currently I have a 6.4 system at home that I can't get connected to my ISP (don't worry, getting ready to switch), but what if a high speed connection were not available, what would be the best way to keep a system updated with newest software, bugfixes, etc. and even kernel?
Thanks,
Daniel
