Yes, it has an external VGA socket, but nothing was connected. The issue has been resolved (toggle desktop effects), I guess the logs are no longer interesting?
If KDE4 on 12.3, can you open
configure desktop
display configuration
show list of available display resolutions (hover the tiny icons to find tooltip)
select and apply an appropriate one, and have it survive a session restart?
